Doctor How and the Illegal Aliens Doctor How book one Volume 1 Mark Speed 9780957320451 Books Reviews
How does a Doctor Who fan stay entertained while waiting for the next season of new episodes? Well, there are old Doctor Who episodes available on video, Doctor Who audio adventures, Doctor Who novels and Doctor Who comic books. And now, there is Doctor How!
The character, Doctor How, is quirky and has the right amount of self-assured cockiness that you would expect from a Time Lord in the vein of Doctor Who. He is a germophobe with a touch of OCD. He can be insensitive and will remind his human companion of his superior intellect. Moreover, His irritation with his cousins, Who, What, When, Where, and Why, who have abandoned their positions, leaving Doctor How to be the one to save the day, will show at times. It makes him come off as crotchety and I hear Patrick Troughton (or maybe it’s Sylvester McCoy) in my head when this Doctor has dialogue. However, it becomes apparent that he does care about protecting the Earth and I find myself really liking this character. His strong sense of duty is admirable. His subtle sense of humor is spot on.
I wasn't sure what to expect, having reviewed the works of new authors before. I have been disappointed with some of those works, but Doctor How and the Illegal Aliens was everything I was hoping for. I will certainly read any further adventures of this character.
Doctor How. No, not that Doctor, his brother. And his cousin, Doctor Where. They're from Gaelfrey, NOT Gallifrey, and their travel devices are actually called Spectrels. So much wrong in that series - don't get Doctor How started on his brother or the BBC...
Doctor How is a clever, sarcastic, Time *Keeper*, Kevin, his assistant, is a thief who hacks, Doctor Where drives a cab, and lives in a dirty run-down house, much to the ire of his neighbours, who can see the values of their properties plummeting while he remains.
Something is stealing diesel and disappearing underground, and Doctor How, Kevin, and Doctor Where set out to solve the mystery. Throw in some blundering bureaucrats, MI16 (yes, 16), and alien hackers, and you end up with a humorous adventure through time and space. This is not a Doctor Who story, and no TARDISes are involved, but they may be parodied. This book is a must for fans of that famous series, as long as they don't mind it being sent up. I thought it was well written and very enjoyable - even more than some incarnations of the TV show. Recommended.
Disclaimer I obtained this book for free - but now I'll have to buy the rest of the series!
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I'm a big fan of that other guy and I couldn't imagine where Mark would go with the subject that would't seem trite. I was blown away by the fresh take he brought to the world and the spin he used to bring the story to life!
It takes real guts as an author to adopt such a beloved and well known universe and dive in headfirst with their own individual twist on it. Mark immediately creates a world that's shiny and new yet still comfortably familiar. His Doctor is at the same time recognizable and still unique and quirky in his own way. His assistant is just what you'd expect but has a rougher edge than the goody two shoe types that other guy seems to attract.
You'll know what to expect when it comes to the trials the Doctor goes through but the spin of being a civil servant makes him more of any every day kind of guy regardless of his advanced technology and living for what to us mere humans seems like forever. He has a resignation to his life that makes him more relatable, at least to me, even though he's one of those time traveling types.
I liked the grittier and more down to earth setting for the story and the way you get a feel for his assistant's world being less than perfect. The path the story takes keeping you turning pages and reading well past when you should have turned off the light and gotten some sleep.
The mark of a good book is hating to see it end and I can only take solace in the fact that there's more of this series yet to be read! If you enjoy the world of that other guy, you'll love Doctor How!
