Other reviewers temper their criticism of Kirkpatrick's poorly executed series by praising his maps and the detail of his physical world. I can't even see that. The maps are lovely- but do not elucidate the plot. He provides a very detailed map of the area surrounding Loulea where geography is irrelevant. Yet even though the geography of the West Road is crucial to the story it is not even on the larger map! Brudhwo is about to invade so it would be nice to know from whence this invasion will come. Of course this country is not on the map either. This is a bit like Tolkein relying on the Hobbit map for The Lord of the Rings! The plot is thin and derivative, there is no real point of view, the characters are cardboard and Kirkpatrick's story reads like a background sketch for the real novel. That said- I wish he had been blessed with a competent editor and some rudimentary knowledge of creative writing because his ideas could have been made into a compelling story. Such a waste. Of an interesting concept and the readers time.

Really there isnt too much more to say than that. I just finished The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Day 1) before I started this book. It was like eating a nice kobe steak and then the next day going to McDonalds. I wish I could track this author down and ask for my time and money back.
A great evil that was believed to be more myth than truth. Many nations lived a uneasy trust. But it back and it's planning to rebuild it's empire again. Thou it's empire died thousand or so on go. A group of unlikely heroes are in charge of stop this being that is old than most cities.
Great fantasy fiction. Characters are well developed.
I bought all 3 of them, but definitely hope that the second book is better. Way, way, way too much detail. Even before reading the blurb about the author, I knew that his other hobby was map making lol. I tend to be a little more generous with authors first books and/or the first book in a series as it tends to be a lot of set up, but this was a crazy amount of set up. Gotta give the author props for diligence )
Before I bought this first book, I did read all the reviews. And since they are obviously split, it can't be either that good or that bad, can it? Hmm. Here's the thing The landscape, the terrain, is a character all by itself. Maybe embodiments of the godhead and the figure of evil in this story. The god is as a mysterious kind of guy as the earth he watches over. And I liked all this immense attention to detail the author gives to everything, because that means he's thought things out thoroughly and he won't leave you some where in the middle flapping in disbelief for thin plot lines. I found it at a perfect pitch, with no false notes.
The other thing I liked about it, besides the fact that is well written, is that he doesn't kill off all the people just when you get to like them. You know the heros you start with will finish it. But the first reviewer was right, you have to love to get into the thick of a big book and wallow in it. And, I thought there was plenty of action all the way through.
But maybe the question is, how do you like to spend your vacation? Traipsing through the wilderness? Watch National Geographic Channel do you? Animal Planet? Can't get enough about all the creepy weird stuff in South America & Egypt on the History Channel? If you know that Yellowstone is actually a large volcanic cauldera.... then? I would say you just might really like this book. I did.
I feel bad for giving such a poor rating to this book. This world is incredibly well-developed as far as geography and history is concerned. It's the work of years. However, the story itself is lacking not the point of non-existence. There is a plot, but it is little more than a device that allows cardboard cut-out characters to wander Mr. Kirkpatrick's extremely well-realized world. For some, that may be enough, but for me, not so much. The prose is outstanding when it comes to describing features of the world. It falls flat when it calls for dialogue or when characters interact with one another. As a result, the book fails.
