How to Win at High School Owen Matthews Books

I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, I flew through it in one sitting, it was a quick read which I attribute to the way it was set out in the book, with some pages only having a couple of sentences at most.

High School can be a scary time for a lot of people especially for Adam Higgs, a self-confessed loser who is determined to rise high in the ranks and hang with the popular kids, ever since his older brother Sam was injured playing hockey and ended up a paraplegic he's determined to have Sam live vicariously through him and to become king of the school just like Sam should have had the chance to be, the only problem is obtaining that goal, when you're known as the pizza boy working at the local Pizza Hut you need something else to be known for, so when an opportunity opens up he takes it, and that is doing the popular kids homework for money, that soon moves onto alcohol and pills, even having to hire other people to help him with his growing business, but Adam is so focused on his goal that his girlfriend Victoria (who is blind to what he's actually doing) and Sam get set aside for his determination to rule the school.

Things end up going downhill eventually lost amidst the money, booze, sex and drugs will Adam realise all that he's lost on his way to popularity?

I found this book to be almost addictive in the sense I really didn't wan't to put it down, an interesting male lead who goes from zero to hero his upwards rise and downwards fall and all the stuff in-between, thoroughly enjoyable and a great look into high school hierachy.

How to Win at High School Owen Matthews Books Reviews

How to Win at High School was a quick read. I know it doesn’t sound like it because it has over 500 pages, but each chapter/section was only 1-2 pages long. It was kinda like reading a novel in verse, but the writing wasn't quite verse-like (not in the way that I've read before). The writing style was really cool! And different. It definitely took some getting used to.

The book was pretty good. Things just got crazier and crazier as time went on. The levels at which Adam (Pizza Man) went to be popular--to be noticed, to be a "god"-were insane. He was such a selfish character. He was out of control and so desperate. He hated being Pizza Man. He just wanted more and MORE and MORE. He eventually became a person that he didn't like--hell, that no one genuinely liked. I sure didn't like him as a person, but I liked the character building. I liked reading his story.

This book was about being yourself and not worrying about what everyone else thinks. If you do that, you'll be happier than being someone else and trying so hard to be popular. That’s the message I received, and it helped me really like the story. I like it when good messages are pulled off well in books.

The ending went a bit too quick for me. It was a little rushed and didn't seem to conclude the story as well as it should have. Adam’s character growth could’ve been demonstrated stronger in this part.

Overall, How to Win at High School was decent. I didn’t have many expectations at all for this one, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it!

Rating 3.5 out of 5 stars

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Oh Adam...as a teacher, I knew that what you were doing was wrong...but as a reader, I couldn't stop myself in cheering you on. What a fantastic book this was. First, it was in verse. My favorite! And second, it was both funny and sad at the same time! I was transported to a TV sitcom from my childhood (Dawson's Creek, Saved By the Bell, One Tree Hill) and I loved every minute!

There were so many things I LOVED about this book, I don't know where to start. Let's try the characters first. "You know them. and you don't know them." You know...the popular kids. All high schools have them. The ones everyone wants to be like and hope and pray that they will even look at you. Adam wants to be one of those kids. The way Adam describes them, though, you can pick out exactly who they were in your high school. For me, it was a guy named Casey and a girl named Katie. I wanted to date Casey and look like Katie. For Adam it was the same way. He wanted to fit in with the "gods and goddesses." The character's felt so real and seeing everything from Adam's POV made the story more real. You could see the struggles he had with being a good boyfriend to Victoria, or being a "god" himself.

I know a lot of people might think the plot of the story is unrealistic. What would make a guy do all of those things like steal tests, sell fake ID's and deal drugs for popularity. I see it all the time!! Even in middle school my students are doing drastic things for popularity. I wish that kids didn't have to resort to illegal things for people to like them, but sadly this happens all the time.

Overall, I thought the writing was spot on and the characters left me thinking about them for days. I can't wait for this book to come out so others can enjoy it as much as I did. I would recommend this for high school students because there is some scenes that younger students shouldn't know about...like threesomes...
Found this book in the library and bought a copy. Great coming of age tale! Enjoyed this a lot! Must read.
